Manchester City ‘to offer Raheem Sterling £300k a week’

Manchester City are reportedly preparing to reward Raheem Sterling with a new £300,000-a-week contract.

The 22-year-old has managed 13 goals in 19 appearances for City during the 2017-18 campaign, with his form key in helping the Citizens open up a healthy lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The England international still has two and a half years left to run on his current contract, but according to The Sun, City will open talks on a £300,000-a-week deal, which would see him become the highest-paid player in the Premier League.

Sterling has already scored more goals this season then he managed in the entirety of the 2016-17 campaign (10).

City will look to once again open up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League when they welcome struggling West Ham United to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Arsene Wenger: ‘Jose Mourinho will not park the bus’

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he does not expect Jose Mourinho to adopt an overly-defensive approach when Manchester United travel to the Emirates Stadium.

The Red Devils have failed to beat any top-six opposition away from home under Mourinho in seven attempts since he took charge last year, drawing three and losing four.

United have also netted just one goal in that time – in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur six months ago – and were recently criticised for the tactics deployed in their goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Wenger believes that the visitors will attempt to find the right balance between attack and defence on Saturday evening, however, telling reporters: “I don’t expect anything special [defensively]. Man United is a strong team and I expect us just to cope with the problems they will give us.

“They will attack as well. They will not only defend. It is a game between Arsenal and Man United at home. I just want to focus and to prepare well my team, and give my team a good chance to win the game. Man United are doing well at the moment, we are doing well at the moment, so it looks to be a promising game.”

Wenger, who will be without club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette against United, has seen his side climb into fourth place following a run of three-successive wins.

Jose Mourinho confirms Zlatan Ibrahimovic return

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in the matchday squad to face Newcastle United on Saturday.

The striker has been out of action since April with a long-term knee injury and had been expected tor remain on the sidelines until early 2018, but has recovered more quickly than expected and recently returned to full training.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the game, Mourinho revealed that Ibrahimovic will start on the bench for the visit of the Magpies, having been deemed “ready to play”.

Paul Pogba, who has been out with a hamstring injury since September, and defender Marcos Rojo, who has been absent since April due to cruciate surgery, will also be named in the squad.

Talking to MUTV, Mourinho explained: “The players that stayed here and [were] recovering from injuries, even the ones that are recovering from big injuries, they are ready to play.”

Speaking earlier this week, Ibrahimovic hinted that he could play in a number 10 role when he returns from injury.

Victor Moses: ‘Criticism makes Chelsea stronger’

Chelsea wing-back Victor Moses has insisted that the mood in the camp is still good despite the team coming in for criticism at times this season.

Chelsea stormed to the Premier League title in record-breaking fashion with 30 wins last season, but their defence has got off to a shaky start and the champions already find themselves nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City after 11 games.

The Blues’ form has been such that even manager Antonio Conte’s future has come under scrutiny, but Moses is confident that they can recover to push City all the way in the title race.

“I think we have done well. We as a team, whatever happens, we stick together and do the best we can. I think people have been a bit too harsh but we don’t need to think about that or concentrate on what people have been saying. These criticisms are the kinds of things that makes a player stronger,” he told Goal.

“We know we just need to believe in ourselves and prove them wrong then win as many games as we can. We are 100% together. We are like brothers here. Even after losing to Roma, we believe in ourselves collectively and individually. We just take each game as it comes. We beat Manchester United in our last match and now everyone is saying we’re the best. Football is like this.

“Why can’t we compete with City, United or any other club? Our players are good enough to compete with anyone. We have a lot of games to go so you can’t tell who’s going to win the league. We are nine points from Man City but we believe in ourselves and we believe that something can happen further down the line and that we will find ourselves back at the top. We still believe in ourselves and in the manager we have got so we will keep working hard and see where it takes us.”

Chelsea are back in action against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, when they will look to make it four Premier League wins in a row.

Sergio Aguero was taken to hospital after fainting in the dressing room at half-time in Argentina’s 4-2 defeat by Nigeria in Krasnodar, Russia.

The Manchester City striker had scored to put his side 2-0 up in the first half, but Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi found the net twice as Nigeria came back.

The Argentina FA said the 29-year-old had been taken to hospital to “carry out routine studies as a precaution”.

They later confirmed that Aguero had been discharged from hospital.

“He is already in the hotel along with the rest of the team,” they tweeted.

After the match Argentina manager Jorge Sampaoli said Aguero had “got dizzy and had to leave”.

In a statement City said he had been cleared by doctors to return to Manchester as planned “after suffering a dizzy spell” during the match.

“Sergio never lost consciousness, and was taken to hospital for precautionary medical checks,” the club said. “He will be assessed by the club’s medical team ahead of this weekend’s Premier League trip to Leicester City.”

Aguero, who became City’s all-time leading goalscorer earlier this month, had recently returned to action after he suffered a rib injury in a car crash in Amsterdam in September. He was injured when a taxi he was travelling in after attending a concert crashed into a lamp post.

In Wednesday’s international friendly, Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho netted with a free-kick and Brian Idowu was also on the scoresheet for the Super Eagles, who had fallen behind to strikes from Aguero and Ever Banega

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale sidelined with adductor injury

Real Madrid have revealed that winger Gareth Bale will spend another period on the sidelines after suffering an adductor injury.

Bale had only just returned to training after missing over a month of action with a calf problem, and the Welsh star had been hoping to return for the derby clash with Atletico Madrid after the international break.

However, the 28-year-old has sustained a fresh problem, with some reports suggesting that the attacker could be missing for the next month.

A club statement read: “Our player Gareth Bale, who felt some discomfort in his left leg at the end of Thursday’s training session, today underwent various tests carried out by the Real Madrid Sanitas medical team.

“He has been diagnosed with a strain to the middle third of the adductor longus muscle in his left leg. His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

Bale had made 10 appearances during the first seven weeks of the season, but this is one of a number of fitness setbacks which have occurred since the start of the last campaign.

Northern Ireland’s World Cup dream may have been dashed in controversial fashion after Switzerland claimed a 1-0 success in the first leg of their play-off at Windsor Park.

Referee Ovidiu Hategan awarded a penalty for a handball when Corry Evans was struck on the back of the shoulder at point-blank range by Xherdan Shaqiri’s volley as he turned his back.

Ricardo Rodriguez’s successful conversion of the spot-kick proved to be the only goal of the night and leaves the Northern Irish with a mountain to climb in the return leg in Basel on Sunday.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill: “It is staggering to see. The ball clearly strikes Corry on the back and the referee has a clear view of the incident. I thought he had given an offside or something. You could tell even from the Swiss players, there was a reaction of surprise that they had been given a penalty for an incident like that.”

Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic: “You could decide it’s a penalty but you can’t cry if it’s not given, it’s not a definite penalty. After all we deserved to win, only because of our lack of finishing do we talk about this penalty.”

Eric Dier will skipper a new-look England side in Friday evening’s friendly against world champions Germany at Wembley Stadium.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is to become the sixth captain of boss Gareth Southgate’s reign and, at the age of 23, the fifth-youngest of the post-war era.

Asked about Dier’s qualities on the eve of the high-profile friendly, Southgate told reporters: “Eric is an established player in the side now. He plays with maturity and intelligence. He understands the game really well. He is also a great role model.

“His approach to everything is very professional. He hardly ever misses a game and plays in an unselfish manner. I think he can be even more of a leader than he currently is and I am hoping giving him this reward and responsibility will also bring even more out of him as well.”

According to Sky Sports News, meanwhile, Swansea City loanee Tammy Abraham will make his senior England debut alongside Jamie Vardy in attack.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek will also win his maiden cap at international level, while Jake Livermore and the returning Danny Rose are also in line to start.

Expected England XI: Pickford; Trippier, Maguire, Stones, Jones, Rose; Dier, Livermore, Loftus-Cheek; Abraham, Vardy

Liverpool attacker Sadio Mane returns to training ahead of schedule

Liverpool have been handed a major boost as Sadio Mane has returned to training ahead of schedule.

The 25-year-old sustained a hamstring injury while on international duty with Senegal last month, and was initially expected to be out for six weeks.

However, Mane made his return to full training at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground on Thursday, less than a month after picking up the injury.

Mane will reportedly not be considered for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with West Ham United, with his comeback drafted in for the game against former club Southampton at Anfield after the international break on November 18.

In addition, Mane has been named in Senegal’s squad for the World Cup qualifying double-header against South Africa on November 10 and 14.

Dele Alli ‘not surprised’ by Tottenham Hotspur’s dominance against Real Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli has praised the performance of his teammates after stunning Real Madrid in the Champions League.

On Wednesday evening at Wembley, Mauricio Pochettino’s men progressed into the knockout rounds of the competition with a 3-1 victory over the Spanish giants.

Alli, who missed Spurs’ opening three group matches due to a UEFA ban, scored twice before Christian Eriksen topped off a successful night for the North London outfit.

“It was a fantastic display by us,” the 21-year-old told. “We knew if we stuck to our gameplan and were solid at back then we’d get chances. We’re very happy with the result.

“I wasn’t surprised [we were dominant]. We couldn’t believe how much space we had at the Bernabeu. We don’t want to just compete with these teams we want to beat them. I’m happy to get two goals but more importantly it was a win.”

Tottenham have two more games left to play before they contemplate the round of 16.

Manchester City, Napoli fans hit with belt ban ahead of Champions League game

Manchester City fans have been banned from wearing belts inside the Stadio San Paolo for Wednesday night’s Champions League game against Napoli.

Staff and media are also prohibited from taking the accessories into the ground, while it is unclear whether the ban extends to Pep Guardiola and his players.

The decision follows trouble when the two sides met in Manchester a fortnight ago.

A Napoli fan was jailed for five months for his part in an attack in a pub near the Etihad Stadium where belts were used as weapons.

Kevin Parker, general secretary of the Manchester City Supporters Club, has branded the rule in place for the Group F fixture “ridiculous”.

“It’s absolutely crazy,” he told the Daily Mail. “I know they have had issues with Napoli fans using belts as weapons but since when has that been a thing in England? Why, all of a sudden, should City fans be banned?”

City are currently top of Group F having beaten Napoli 2-1 in the reverse fixture to go six points above the Italian side with three wins from three.

Romelu Lukaku: Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho says striker is ‘untouchable’

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku should be “untouchable” from fans’ criticism, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The £75m summer signing from Everton, 24, scored 11 goals in his first 10 games – but none in his last five.

“What he does for the team is fantastic and to play football for a striker is not just about scoring goals,” said the Manchester United boss.

“I think Romelu is one of the players who should be untouchable in terms of respect from everyone.”

The Belgium forward, sold by Mourinho while he was Chelsea manager, drew his fifth blank in a row against Tottenham on Saturday – but did set up Anthony Martial’s winner.

After that game Mourinho was not happy with a perceived lack of support for Lukaku from the Old Trafford crowd.

“For me, he is untouchable in my team and I think he should be untouchable in the support and the respect he deserves from the fans,” Lukaku’s manager added.

Liverpool versus Manchester United again failed to live up to the hype as Jose Mourinho's safety-first policy saw him once more frustrate the hosts at Anfield, writes Carl Markham.

United goalkeeper David de Gea made one brilliant reaction save from Joel Matip in the first half but Jurgen Klopp's side failed to break down well-organised opponents.

It is a criticism which has been regularly levelled at the Reds this season but was perhaps excusable on this occasion considering the rivalry and the quality - United began the day joint top - they faced.

While United were not as dour as in last season's game here, there was no doubt Mourinho had reined in the attacking intent of a side which had previously scored 33 goals in 11 matches.

Ander Herrera was tasked with taking care of Liverpool's creative fulcrum Philippe Coutinho, with the Brazilian restricted to one really dangerous defence-splitting through-ball in the first half which overlapping full-back Alberto Moreno wasted with an overhit cross.

Mohamed Salah, on the right wing, was more of a threat and gave Matteo Darmian a testing time with the defender lucky not to concede a free-kick - or worse - right on the edge of the penalty area.

De Gea, who saved brilliantly with an outstretched foot at close range from Matip, could only watch as Firmino's deflected cross off Darmian rolled wide of his far post but for all Liverpool's dominance the goalkeeper was hardly tested.

At the other end of the field in-form striker Romelu Lukaku cut an isolated figure and his frustration boiled over as he took out Joe Gomez but escaped with only a warning from Mike Atkinson, who also decided no action was required against Lukaku with Dejan Lovren rolling around on the floor suggesting he had been caught in the face by a stray boot.

United's one chance came just before the break when Lukaku exchanged passes with Anthony Martial but was denied by Simon Mignolet, with Moreno throwing himself at Ashley Young's shot from the rebound.

A similar pattern developed in the second half, with Coutinho frequently dropping deeper and more central to try to change the angle of attack.

It was to no avail, however, as - despite three attacking changes late on from Klopp with Daniel Sturridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dominic Solanke introduced - their best chance came when Emre Can volleyed over Gomez's teasing cross.

United, by contrast, failed to have a shot on target after the break. Lukaku, with 16 goals in 13 appearances for club and country, was virtually anonymous as his quest to become the first United player to score in his first eight Premier League matches ended with a whimper.

But Mourinho is always looking at the bigger picture and his mantra has always been not to lose the big games.

With that he got what he came for. Again.

It may have briefly handed the initiative to Manchester City, who were ahead of them only on goal difference at the start of the day, but United's boss takes a longer-term view.
