Romelu Lukaku: Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho says striker is ‘untouchable’

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku should be “untouchable” from fans’ criticism, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The £75m summer signing from Everton, 24, scored 11 goals in his first 10 games – but none in his last five.

“What he does for the team is fantastic and to play football for a striker is not just about scoring goals,” said the Manchester United boss.

“I think Romelu is one of the players who should be untouchable in terms of respect from everyone.”

The Belgium forward, sold by Mourinho while he was Chelsea manager, drew his fifth blank in a row against Tottenham on Saturday – but did set up Anthony Martial’s winner.

After that game Mourinho was not happy with a perceived lack of support for Lukaku from the Old Trafford crowd.

“For me, he is untouchable in my team and I think he should be untouchable in the support and the respect he deserves from the fans,” Lukaku’s manager added.

United host Benfica on Tuesday in the Champions League knowing a win could take them into the knockout stages if CSKA Moscow fail to beat Basel.

Liverpool versus Manchester United again failed to live up to the hype as Jose Mourinho's safety-first policy saw him once more frustrate the hosts at Anfield, writes Carl Markham.

United goalkeeper David de Gea made one brilliant reaction save from Joel Matip in the first half but Jurgen Klopp's side failed to break down well-organised opponents.

It is a criticism which has been regularly levelled at the Reds this season but was perhaps excusable on this occasion considering the rivalry and the quality - United began the day joint top - they faced.

While United were not as dour as in last season's game here, there was no doubt Mourinho had reined in the attacking intent of a side which had previously scored 33 goals in 11 matches.

Ander Herrera was tasked with taking care of Liverpool's creative fulcrum Philippe Coutinho, with the Brazilian restricted to one really dangerous defence-splitting through-ball in the first half which overlapping full-back Alberto Moreno wasted with an overhit cross.

Mohamed Salah, on the right wing, was more of a threat and gave Matteo Darmian a testing time with the defender lucky not to concede a free-kick - or worse - right on the edge of the penalty area.

De Gea, who saved brilliantly with an outstretched foot at close range from Matip, could only watch as Firmino's deflected cross off Darmian rolled wide of his far post but for all Liverpool's dominance the goalkeeper was hardly tested.

At the other end of the field in-form striker Romelu Lukaku cut an isolated figure and his frustration boiled over as he took out Joe Gomez but escaped with only a warning from Mike Atkinson, who also decided no action was required against Lukaku with Dejan Lovren rolling around on the floor suggesting he had been caught in the face by a stray boot.

United's one chance came just before the break when Lukaku exchanged passes with Anthony Martial but was denied by Simon Mignolet, with Moreno throwing himself at Ashley Young's shot from the rebound.

A similar pattern developed in the second half, with Coutinho frequently dropping deeper and more central to try to change the angle of attack.

It was to no avail, however, as - despite three attacking changes late on from Klopp with Daniel Sturridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dominic Solanke introduced - their best chance came when Emre Can volleyed over Gomez's teasing cross.

United, by contrast, failed to have a shot on target after the break. Lukaku, with 16 goals in 13 appearances for club and country, was virtually anonymous as his quest to become the first United player to score in his first eight Premier League matches ended with a whimper.

But Mourinho is always looking at the bigger picture and his mantra has always been not to lose the big games.

With that he got what he came for. Again.

It may have briefly handed the initiative to Manchester City, who were ahead of them only on goal difference at the start of the day, but United's boss takes a longer-term view.

Not many managers could do better than me – Klopp

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says there are few managers who could have done a better job at the club than him.

Klopp has yet to win major silverware two years after being appointed following Brendan Rodgers’ sacking.

Defeat by Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday will leave the Reds on 12 points from eight games – the same tally as when Rodgers was dismissed.

“I don’t think I am perfect but it’s quite difficult to find better options,” said Klopp, 50.

Liverpool have won only once in their past seven games in all competitions and are seventh in the Premier League, seven points behind both Manchester clubs.

They are out of the Carabao Cup and remain without a win from two games in the Champions League.

Klopp said: “If they sack me now, I don’t think there would be a lot of managers who would do the job better than I do.

“There’s not the biggest distance between us and the top teams.

“If I came in today as the new manager and if everybody would give us this kind of time to take the next step, that would be perfect.”

Kenny Dalglish, one of Klopp’s predecessors, agrees with the German that patience is required.

“If you buy well enough then you can compete,” said Dalglish, who won the title three times in charge of Liverpool between 1985 and 1991. “You don’t have to do it in one transfer window, it may take four or five.

“I think it is society. People are used to instant solutions but it doesn’t work in football.

“A bit of patience doesn’t go amiss for anyone who wants to be successful.”

Mourinho expects atmosphere of ‘animosity’

United manager Jose Mourinho says it “will be beautiful” to take his side to Anfield, despite expecting an atmosphere of “animosity”.

The Red Devils would go 10 points ahead of their rivals with victory on Saturday, while Liverpool will hope to win at home for the first time since August.

“We know that the fans have huge animosity against us historically, but this is what we want,” Mourinho said.

“I never see a player complain: ‘Oh, this atmosphere was very strong.'”

Preview: Liverpool vs Manchester United

Liverpool and Manchester United will renew their fierce rivalry on Saturday when Jose Mourinho’s high-flying Red Devils travel to Anfield.

Seven points already separate the two sides in the Premier League table, but this will be United’s first real test of their title credentials and both teams will go into the biggest match in English football confident of picking up a win.

Liverpool

Liverpool were being touted as genuine title contenders throughout the last international break following a 4-0 victory over Arsenal, but it has been a very different story this time around.

Just one win in seven matches between the international breaks have left the Reds seventh in the Premier League table, without a win from two Champions League games and eliminated from the EFL Cup following a hugely disappointing September.

The gap to the leading Manchester clubs is already seven points, and defeat on Saturday would extend that to 10. While it is still too early to come to any final conclusions regarding the league table, a 10-point deficit would be a very big ask for Liverpool to overhaul considering how impressive both City and United have looked thus far.

Describing this match as a must-win game for Liverpool would be premature – they have only lost once in the Premier League this season and are only one point off the top four, after all – but it is verging on a must-not-lose contest if the Reds have any serious designs on challenging for the title.

Jurgen Klopp’s style isn’t exactly conducive to favouring not losing over winning, though, and the German is highly unlikely to change his philosophy for United’s visit this weekend, despite his side going seven matches without a clean sheet across all competitions and only West Ham United and Crystal Palace having conceded more Premier League goals this season.

The defence has been a long-standing issue which, by his own admission, Klopp is losing patience with, but the growing concern for Liverpool prior to the international break was their wastefulness in front of goal. Many of their dropped points came in matches they otherwise dominated, but were unable to kill off.

Draws against the likes of Burnley and Leicester City – and earlier in the season Watford – are frustratingly nothing new for Liverpool, though, and despite their poor recent form there will be many backing them to win this weekend given their exemplary record against direct rivals under Klopp.

The German has spent just over two years in the Anfield hotseat now, and in that time he has lost only two of his 20 outings against Arsenal, Chelsea, the Manchester clubs and Tottenham Hotspur, often saving their best performances for some of their closest rivals.

It is a record which leaves Liverpool top of the top-six mini-league during Klopp’s tenure, although he is yet to record a Premier League victory over United – perhaps due largely to United’s style of play being most closely aligned with a ‘smaller’ club than any other from that ‘big six’.

United look like a different beast this season, though, and with Liverpool winless at home since August the visitors may be tempted to attack more than they have on recent visits – something which could play into the hosts’ hands.

Man Utd

Following a severely underwhelming debut season on the Premier League front last term, Mourinho’s Manchester United are making up for lost time and have set the early pace alongside local rivals City so far.

Having dropped 23 points at home last season, United have begun this campaign with a perfect record in front of their own fans, and they are not far behind on their travels either with a 2-2 draw at Stoke City the only blemish on their away record so far.

Questions still remain over the credibility of their title credentials, though, as while City have already claimed maximum points from matches against Liverpool and Chelsea, this weekend’s contest will be United’s first big test against a direct top-six rival this season.

Of course, Mourinho’s side can only beat what is put in front of them and a 10-match unbeaten streak which includes nine wins is impressive no matter the opponents, but the real tests are still to come for the Red Devils, starting at Anfield on Saturday.

Mourinho will face questions of his own heading into the match having developed a reputation for playing defensive football away to direct rivals in recent years, and the Portuguese boss must decide whether to once again shut up shop – a tactic which has proved effective in the past, not least at Anfield – or look to continue his side’s free-scoring streak in front of goal.

United have averaged three goals per game in the Premier League this season and trail only City in the scoring charts, while they have found the back of the net four times in a game on six separate occasions during their last 10 outings – four of which have come in their past five matches.

Saturday’s visitors are more equipped to take the game to Liverpool than they were last season, then, but Mourinho may still opt for the safer approach knowing that their hosts tend to struggle more against teams who let them see more of the ball.

Manchester City will be expected to beat Stoke City at home later on the Saturday, though, which could force Mourinho to be more aggressive in order to put the pressure on his local rivals by temporarily moving to the top of the table.

Mourinho has played down the added significance of this fixture between English football’s two most successful clubs, but he will know first hand how important it really is, and his own personal rivalry with Liverpool from his days at Chelsea will only add spice to an already mouth-watering contest.

The former Real Madrid boss has not managed a team to a Premier League victory over Liverpool in almost three years, though, while his personal record against Klopp is also underwhelming with just one win from seven previous meetings.

Team News

Liverpool have been hit by the news that winger Sadio Mane – only recently back from suspension – is likely to spend six weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury sustained on international duty with Senegal.

There were no other major injury problems during the break, although Philippe Coutinho and Georginio Wijnaldum trained away from the rest of the squad on Thursday having been in action for Brazil and Netherlands respectively.

Dejan Lovren pulled out of Croatia’s qualifier with Finland but featured in the win over Ukraine and should be fit to start this weekend despite his recent admission about taking painkillers before every match.

Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana remain sidelined for the Reds, though, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be handed his first Premier League start for the club as a result.

Manchester United also suffered an injury blow during the international break as Marouane Fellaini sustained ligament damage for Belgium, leaving Mourinho short in midfield due to the continued absence of Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick.

Fellaini’s compatriot Romelu Lukaku did come through the break unscathed after being used sparingly, and a goal for the in-form striker on Saturday would see him set a new club record of eight goals from his first eight Premier League games for the club.

Phil Jones could be in contention following a knee injury, although Mourinho has Eric Bailly available to deputise should the England international not recover in time.

Liverpool possible starting lineup:
Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold; Matip, Lovren, Moreno; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Can; Salah, Firmino, Coutinho

Man Utd possible starting lineup:
De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Young; Matic, Herrera, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Rashford; Lukaku

Head To Head
Manchester United are winless in their last four meetings with Liverpool across all competitions, although the three most recent editions of this famous fixture have all ended as a draw.

The corresponding fixture last term was goalless at Anfield – only the second time that has happened in the last 50 league meetings between the teams – while at Old Trafford in January United needed a late Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal to cancel out James Milner’s first-half penalty.

Liverpool have failed to win any of their last six Premier League games against United, though, and you have to go back more than four years to September 2013 for their last league win over their fiercest rivals at Anfield, when Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of the game.

Joel Matip v Romelu Lukaku: The key battle in Liverpool v Man Utd

Will Man Utd star Romelu Lukaku get the better of Liverpool’s Joel Matip on Saturday?

The Premier League returns in emphatic fashion on Saturday lunchtime with a heavyweight clash between Liverpool and Manchester United.

For the home side to find success, Liverpool’s inconsistent defence, led by Joel Matip, must find a way of containing a red-hot Romelu Lukaku.

Matip is the only regular starter in Liverpool’s defence to have been signed by Jurgen Klopp, which is peculiar given the way the manager’s attacking system can often expose his defenders. The Cameroon international is better suited to cope with this approach than many of his colleagues, and plays an important role.

He is particularly skilled in one-on-one situations, which is an essential trait for any defender playing under Klopp. He was dribbled past just six times last season, while every other Liverpool player to make 40 or more tackles was beaten at least three times as much.

Another strong part of Matip’s game is his ability to premeditate attacking movement. While it was not on show for Liverpool’s recent goal conceded against Newcastle, he is often able to read forwards and react ahead of the pass, highlighted by his high interception count (19) – Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal is the only Premier League defender with more this season.

Matip leads the way as Liverpool’s busiest defender by some margin, compiling a larger combined total of tackles, interceptions, clearances and blocks per 90 minutes – a return which will need to swell further to suppress Lukaku.

The Belgium international has been in rampant form since moving to Old Trafford this summer. He’s the division’s top scorer with seven goals, and despite boasting a talented list of attacking luminaries, no Manchester United striker has scored more Premier League goals in his first seven games for the club.

Unsurprisingly, Lukaku’s attacking stats rank alongside the best this season in many categories. Tottenham’s Harry Kane is the only player to test opposing goalkeepers more often, while Kane and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero are the only strikers with more touches in the opposition’s box. It’s easy to draw conclusions about Lukaku finding another level at his new club, though it’s interesting to note his chance conversion rate is almost identical to his final year at Everton. The Belgium striker still needs around four-and-a-half shots to score, just as he did last season, albeit in a relatively small sample size so far.

The key to his early success at Old Trafford, therefore, seems to owe more to his supporting cast than any individual growth. Playing in a more attacking team with more creative threats, Lukaku has been presented with far more opportunities to find the net. He’s currently enjoying an increased shot volume of almost 50 per cent per 90 minutes, which – if maintained – should see him surpass last season’s return of 25 Premier League goals.

Perhaps the only remaining narrative for Lukaku to quash relates to his often inconspicuous presence in bigger games at Everton, further emphasised by his performances against Liverpool. In his last appearance, his only previous game against Matip, he failed to record a single shot in 90 minutes – something he’s done only five times in his last 86 Premier League appearances, twice against Liverpool.

In fact, despite averaging an attempt every 27 minutes over the last three seasons, Lukaku’s currently on a remarkable run of no shot in his last 204 minutes played at Anfield. Going back further, he has only managed to test the opposing goalkeeper with a shot on target in two of his last seven appearances against Liverpool.

This may encourage Matip ahead of Saturday, but Lukaku’s new surroundings make him far more of a factor in the final third than he’s previously been at Anfield.

His new club are currently on a six-match unbeaten run against Liverpool, and with a more constant supply of chances coming his way, Lukaku will be confident of playing a key role in extending that recent streak.

Kane, 24, has been picked on the shortlist for the first time after scoring 43 goals in 37 games for club and country in 2017.

Real Madrid forward Ronaldo, 32, beat Barcelona’s Messi to win the award for a fourth time last year.

Messi, 30, has claimed the prize on five occasions, while no player other than the Argentine or his Portuguese rival has won since Brazil midfielder Kaka in 2007.

Marouane Fellaini set to miss Liverpool game with knee injury

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is set to miss their Premier League game at Liverpool after picking up a knee injury playing for Belgium.

The 29-year-old went off after 29 minutes of a World Cup qualifying win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday.

In a post on social media, Belgium said Fellaini has had a scan and will be “out for a couple of weeks”.

They face Cyprus in their final World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, while United travel to Anfield on 14 October.

The Old Trafford club then visit Benfica in the Champions League four days later before a trip to Huddersfield in the league on 21 October.

Fellaini has scored four goals for United this season, including two in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace in their last game before the international break.

He looks set to join fellow United midfielder Paul Pogba, who is out with a hamstring injury, on the sidelines for his club.
