Gareth Bale: Casemiro defends team-mate after boos from fans

Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro has defended forward Gareth Bale after he was booed for the second game in a row.

Wales international Bales, 28, was jeered by some of the Bernabeu crowd in Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win over Apoel Nicosia.

“He was a very strong player for us and I hope he continues to be so,” Casemiro told Marca.

“We try to protect the players we have. We are always defending our own. It shows that we are a family.”

He added: “I defend my team-mates as if they were my family and I am with them until the end.

“With the quality he has, things will be going well for him one day.”

Bale has scored only one goal in six games for Madrid this season.

Manager Zinedine Zidane said: “I did not listen to the whistles, only the applause.”

Support from Clement

Swansea manager Paul Clement, the former assistant boss at Madrid, said Bale can cope with the boos and emerge a better player.

“That is a club where you need a lot of character,” Clement said.

“Claude Makelele says it is the club you need the most mental toughness, because of how demanding the home crowd are.

“Gareth is not the first top player and he won’t be the last to be booed by the Madrid fans.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has had it, the Brazilian Ronaldo has had it, Zidane, [Luis] Figo. That is the reality of playing for that club.

“Coming through the other side of it makes you a better player, absolutely.

“Some are not able to cope with it, but the real top ones do and they become legends at the club and Gareth can do that. He has won three Champions League.

“I know Gareth well and he can cope. He’s a tough boy and is hungry to do well.”

Alexis Sanchez scored a stunning goal as Arsenal came from behind to beat Cologne 3-1 in a Europa League clash on Thursday that was delayed for an hour due to crowd trouble.
Kick-off in the Group H opener at the Emirates Stadium was put back until 9:05pm local time (2005 GMT) in the interests of "crowd safety" after problems caused by thousands of ticketless Cologne supporters arriving at the ground.

Police confirmed four arrests were made before kick-off while there were reports of scuffles inside the stadium.
However, when the match did get under way, those travelling fans who got in were treated to a stunning 40-yard strike by Jhon Cordoba that put Cologne ahead with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina caught out of his area.
Arsenal improved in the second half and substitute Sead Kolasinac volleyed them level before a brilliant goal by Sanchez gave them a 67th-minute lead.
The Chilean cut in from the left flank before curling a sublime effort into the far top corner, and the three points were secure when Hector Bellerin made it 3-1 late on after Theo Walcott's effort had been saved by Timo Horn.
"The win, and coming back from losing, obviously gives you a boost. Now we'll train hard in the coming days to be ready for the weekend," Bellerin, whose side go to Chelsea on Sunday, told BT Sport.
Arsene Wenger's side are next in European action in a fortnight in Belarus against BATE Borisov, who drew 1-1 at Red Star Belgrade.
Silva hat-trick for Milan
Earlier, Everton's group-stage campaign got off to a disastrous start as Ronald Koeman's side were taken apart in Italy, losing 3-0 to Atalanta.
The Serie A club -- back in Europe after a 26-year absence -- were forced to entertain their English visitors in Reggio Emilia, a two-hour drive south of their base in Bergamo, because their own stadium does not have a licence for European games.
But that did not prove a hindrance to Gian Piero Gasperini's side, who completely overran Everton, scoring all their goals in the first half courtesy of Andrea Masiello, Alejandro Gomez and Bryan Cristante.
Gomez's goal, a stunning curling strike from outside the area, was the pick of the bunch for Atalanta, who also saw Remo Freuler strike the bar early in the second period.
"A lot went wrong. In the first half they showed more aggression, more passion, and that's really painful because in my opinion it starts with that and then you need quality with the ball," Koeman told BT Sport.
"The commitment and passion they showed in the first half was much stronger than us."
Everton's next match in Group E will be at home to Apollon Limassol, the Cypriot side who snatched a 1-1 draw with Lyon on Thursday.
Meanwhile, AC Milan underlined their status as one of the teams to beat in the competition by romping to a 5-1 victory at Austria Vienna in Group D with Andre Silva scoring a hat-trick.
Milan were three goals up inside 20 minutes in the Austrian capital with Hakan Calhanolgu getting the opener and Portugal striker Silva netting twice.
Silva went on to complete his hat-trick after the break before Suso's long-range effort completed the rout.
Hoffenheim, who lost to Liverpool in the Champions League play-offs but beat Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last weekend, suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Portuguese side Braga in Group C despite Sandro Wagner giving them the lead.
Other winners on Thursday included Villarreal, who beat Astana 3-1 in Spain in Group A, and Real Sociedad, who crushed Rosenborg 4-0 in Group L.
Mario Balotelli scored as Nice won 5-1 at Zulte-Waregem of Belgium in Group K, in which Lazio also won, 3-2 at Vitesse Arnhem.
Marseille beat Konyaspor 1-0 in Group I while Athletic Bilbao drew 0-0 at Hertha Berlin in Group J.

Paul Pogba: Man United midfielder facing up to six weeks out with hamstring injury

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is set to be out for between a month and six weeks with the hamstring injury he sustained in Tuesday’s Champions League win over Basel.

The France international, 24, had scans on the injury on Wednesday.

It is understood Pogba will miss at least a month, leaving him struggling to be fit for the Premier League trip to Liverpool on 14 October.

United boss Jose Mourinho will give an update at a news conference on Friday.

Pogba will miss league games against Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace, next Wednesday’s League Cup third-round tie with Burton and the Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow on 27 September.

He will also miss France’s World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Belarus in early October, which they need to win to guarantee their place in Russia next summer

Jose Mourinho: Man Utd boss unhappy with ‘Playstation football’ against Basel

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho accused his players of jeopardising Champions League victory over Basel by playing “Playstation football”.

United marked their return to the competition with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford, but Mourinho was unimpressed with their play in the second half.

“Until 2-0 we were stable, we played with confidence,” he told BT Sport.

“After 2-0 everything changed, we stopped playing seriously and stopped making right decisions.”

The Portuguese continued: “We could have put ourselves in trouble.

“We were playing fantasy football, Playstation football. I don’t like it – flicks and tricks.

“We gambled and you have to respect your opponent. I don’t know if goal difference will play a part.

“We lost position, our shape, we lost balls in easy situations. I didn’t like it – the players relaxed too much.”

‘Fellaini is one of my most important players’

Mourinho was again full of praise for midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who came on in the 19th minute of Tuesday’s game for the injured Paul Pogba, scored United’s first goal and set up their third for Marcus Rashford.

Before the game, Mourinho said he “felt weak” when he did not have the Belgian at his disposal.

“I keep saying the same about Fellaini. He is a player with special qualities and he gives me multiple areas of action,” said Mourinho after Tuesday’s game. “He is one of my most important players.”

Fellaini’s two key contributions to the game came either side of another United goal for Romelu Lukaku.

He now has six for the Red Devils in all competitions since his arrival from Everton and 10 in eight appearances for club and country this season.

Rashford’s goal – coming seven minutes after his introduction from the bench in the 77th minute – continued his run of scoring on debuts. He has now scored on his first appearance in the Champions League, Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup and for England.

‘Squads are for injuries’

Pogba looks set for a spell on the sidelines after limping off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

When asked about the extent of the injury, Mourinho told MUTV: “I don’t know. I just know from experience it’s a muscular injury. In my experience, muscular injury stops you from playing for a few weeks, I think.

“It looks for me too [like a hamstring injury] but I haven’t spoken yet to the medical department.

“Squads are for this, squads are for injuries, squads are for suspensions. We don’t cry with injuries. So if no Paul for Sunday, we have Herrera, we have Carrick, we have Fellaini and we have Matic.”

Champions League: Will Real Madrid retain title? Can PSG win? Are Barca flawed?

Real Madrid are chasing an unprecedented third consecutive Champions League title, Paris St-Germain are breaking spending records and Barcelona appear fallible.

Add a record six British challengers into the mix and this season’s competition, which gets under way on Tuesday, has all the ingredients to be one of the most intriguing yet.

Can Real Madrid make it three in a row?

After becoming the first club to win the trophy in consecutive years in the Champions League era (post-1992), Real Madrid have already made history. The real question is whether they can extend that repeat into a sustained period of dominance, following the achievements of their predecessors who won the first five editions of the European Cup after its foundation in 1956.

There are positive signs in that direction. Rarely has a team gone into a Champions League season as such strong favourites. It’s not just the superlative nature of El Real’s second-half performance that swept aside Juventus in June’s final in Cardiff that persuades, either.

For the first time in a long time at the Bernabeu, it seems like there’s a plan for the future beyond hoovering up superstars. The club has been astute in picking up young talent like Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos and a host of others – and they have a coach in Zinedine Zidane who has the bravery to pick on merit rather than status.

The success of Zidane’s tenure so far can be measured not only in trophies, but by the fact that even Gareth Bale (and Zizou is a big fan of the Welshman) is not sure of a place, especially after Isco’s rise to become arguably Los Merengues’ star performer in the past six months.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos tied down to long contracts and Isco, Asensio and others set to follow suit, the future looks bright.

Should we count Paris St-Germain among the favourites?

If Real Madrid have stepped back from taking the transfer market by the scruff of the neck, then PSG have taken their place in some style.

The signing of Neymar shook the football world, and it felt like a turning point for the French giants. For all their achievements since Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) took over the club in 2011, they had never been able to recruit an elite-level star in his prime – until now.

With France’s brightest talent Kylian Mbappe leaving Monaco for the Parc des Princes, Neymar will continue to be a part of Europe’s most vaunted front three. It’s just that this time it will be a completely new one, made up of the Brazilian, the teenage Mbappe and the profilic Edinson Cavani.

There’s little doubt the trio will click. Some have voiced concerns that Cavani will be marginalised, having been forced out wide when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was at the club, but both Neymar and Mbappe prefer to attack from wide areas. In fact, Mbappe said earlier this year that playing around a traditional number nine in Radamel Falcao gave him the freedom he needs. Cavani will do the same.

The concerns are elsewhere.

Having missed out on Mbappe’s Monaco team-mate Fabinho, PSG are perhaps short of a midfield destroyer, and neither Kevin Trapp nor Alphonse Areola really convince in goal. With last season’s capitulation to Barcelona in the last 16 still fresh in the mind, it’s PSG’s mettle – rather than their flair – that will come under the microscope.

Are Barcelona still realistic contenders?

The sheer amazement value of Barcelona’s comeback against PSG in that last-16 tie – largely inspired by the will and drive of Neymar, rather than the collective brilliance we’ve become used to in recent years – covered a multitude of shortcomings. Still in shock after the Brazilian’s exit to France, the difficulties the Catalan giants face on the pitch and in the boardroom have been laid bare.

Neymar should have been tied down but wasn’t, and he had lost faith in the management. Lionel Messi has still not signed an extension to the contract that runs out in the summer, and after under-pressure president Josep Bartomeu claimed Andres Iniesta was set to sign a new deal, the legendary midfielder publicly denied it.

Yet for all the chaotic management and fudging of transfers, the window wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

They’ve filled a few significant holes, with a quality new right-back in Nelson Semedo and the arrival in midfield of Paulinho, who has been as important for Brazil of late as he was disappointing for Tottenham. Ousmane Dembele, signed from Borussia Dortmund in Neymar’s stead, is a generational talent and a potential Ballon d’Or winner. It’s when you get beyond the XI that the doubts start to arise.

A lack of strength in depth is where Barca started to fall behind their rivals Real, with successive quarter-final defeats after winning the Champions League in 2015 at least partly down to fatigue. With little done to address that, it’s hard to imagine Ernesto Valverde’s side going much further.

Chelsea’s Kante refused to celebrate out of ‘respect’ for Leicester

N’Golo Kante says he did not celebrate after scoring against Leicester out of respect for his former side, as Chelsea beat the Foxes to climb into the top three.

Both sides struggled to find a finishing touch before Alvaro Morata nodded in Cesar Azpilicueta’s searching pass to put Chelsea ahead before half-time.

The visitors pressed home their advantage after the break as former Foxes midfielder Kante, gifted time and space, drilled home low from 30 yards.

In contrast to fellow ex-Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who received a mixed reception after his deadline-day move to Chelsea, Kante had earlier been warmly received by the Leicester crowd.

“It is always special to play my old team. I had an amazing year here but when I come I try to win,” said Kante, who was part of Leicester’s title-winning side.

“It is always a pleasure to score but I keep my celebration inside because I want to respect my old team.”

Chelsea appeared to be cruising to the points after Kante’s strike but a foul by Thibaut Courtois saw Leicester awarded a penalty that Jamie Vardy converted, sparking the hosts into life in a frenetic final half-hour.

But it was Chelsea substitute Willian who came closest to adding to the scoring with a curling strike just wide of the post.

Leicester, who slip to 17th, have now lost six of their last seven home games against Chelsea.

Chelsea end September blues

Prior to this match, Chelsea had not won a Premier League away fixture in September in any of the last four seasons – but Antonio Conte’s side have put in strong performances at the King Power in recent times.

They started brightly and dominated possession in the opening stages but the visitors’ finishing left something to be desired.

Morata was in the mix throughout the first half but was kept in check by Leicester captain Wes Morgan, who provided two crucial blocks in the box to deny him.

The Spaniard eventually got the best of their personal duel, peeling away from the veteran defender to guide a glancing header beyond Kasper Schmeichel from Azpilicueta’s pinpoint pass.

Kante’s strike against his former club – which Schmeichel, quite rightly, looked annoyed to have allowed past him – should have been the end of the match as a contest, but the visitors seemed to lose focus.

Courtois’ clumsy challenge on Vardy for the penalty handed Craig Shakespeare’s men a lifeline, but they could not use the momentum of that goal to claim an equaliser.

Conte’s introduction of Eden Hazard – returning after an ankle injury – and new signing Davide Zappacosta appeared to steady the visitors.

Zappacosta almost marked his debut with a goal after connecting with Hazard’s cross, but it was fellow substitute Willian who had the best chance late in the game when he fired Hazard’s pass low into Schmeichel’s gloves.

“It was a tough game. They had a lot of chances but we fight and had some chances but we won and that is the most important thing,” Kante added.

Leicester fall short

This is the first time the Foxes have lost three of their opening four top-flight fixtures since 1994-95 – a campaign that ended in relegation.

There is still a long way to go this term but Leicester seem to lack cohesiveness in the middle of the park, and Shakespeare was no doubt rueing the absence of Adrien Silva from his plans after the £22m midfielder’s transfer from Sporting Lisbon missed the deadline by 14 seconds.

With Japan forward Shinji Okazaki missing with jet lag, Islam Slimani partnered Vardy up front but they were starved of possession in the first half.

Riyad Mahrez’s direct running created a good opening for Slimani that Courtois did well to save, but any confidence Leicester gleaned from that moment was swiftly erased by Morata’s breakthrough goal shortly after.

Leicester stepped back defensively and, after gifting Cesc Fabregas too much room in the first half, did the same to Kante in the second, and their former star player duly punished them from distance.

Club football is set to resume big time over the weekend and here are some smart picks from some European Leagues.

Both Teams to Score

Liverpool have won four and drawn two of their last six matches against Manchester City and they will be making the trip to Manchester over the weekend. City have been tipped to win this fixture but it will not be an easy ride. They have looked shaky in defence and squander a lot of chances up front, something that might come to haunt them. Both sides have talented players and one thing we can surely expect is plenty of goals during this fixture.

Home Win

Arsenal have come under sharp criticism after they lost two of their last three fixtures. They will have an opportunity to redeem themselves when they host Bournemouth. The visitors have not started the season very well after losses in all of their last three fixtures.

Over 2.5 Goals

Atletico Madrid have won the last four meetings between themselves and Valencia. They won both fixtures to nil last season and they will be looking to extend their dominance again this weekend when they make the trip to Valencia. Atleti have issues to sort at the back whilst Valencia are looking good in this regard. The visitors have been involved in high-scoring matches lately with their last two La Liga fixtures seeing Over 2.5 Goals.

Away Win

Bayern Munich will make the trip to Hoffenheim, a place they have struggled to win at in their last few visits. The hosts have pulled surprises by beating big teams on their home ground but there are doubts over whether they will be able to do that this time around. The Bavarians have a good squad with a lot of attacking talent and for this reason .

Draw

Monaco have had an excellent start to the season and they will be facing Nice side struggling to steady their ship. Nice will want to forget their poor start to the season and we might see the visitors drop points for the very first time this season. The Champions League is set to begin next week and Leonardo Jardim might want to rest some of his key players who have just returned from international duty

Raheem Sterling: ‘Zero chance’ Man City winger would have joined Arsenal

Manager Pep Guardiola says there was “no chance” Manchester City would have used Raheem Sterling as part of any deal to sign Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.

Arsenal had agreed a £60m deal with City for Sanchez, 28, but it was dependent on them signing Thomas Lemar, who decided to stay at Monaco.

Guardiola said the Gunners had wanted Sterling, 22, as part of the deal for his fellow attacker.

“They talked to me. I said ‘zero chance’,” said Guardiola.

“We said we would make a cash offer for Alexis. They accepted but they couldn’t sign the player they wanted, so he stayed at Arsenal.”

Sterling has made three appearances for City so far this season, scoring twice.

He was sent off for celebrating his late winner at Bournemouth before playing twice for England during the international break.

Guardiola added: “I think I tried to help him [Sterling] since I arrived. His mood when I arrived was not at the top and last season he played really good.

“It was never considered that we would swap him. That was not an option. That’s why I didn’t call him, that’s why he didn’t call me.

“It didn’t happen because I think he was 100% committed with us.”
